Drafting, Wind, Steering
Published on 18 Dec 2025, 13:05:08 by Jakub VojacekDiscover how rider position and wind can affect draft, how draft works and how to use steering to draft better.
In MyWhoosh, just like in real-life, you can save energy (power) by drafting other riders. There is an in-game draft indicator - up to 3 green chevrons in the upper status bar. No chevron indicates no draft, three chevrons indicate best draft (power savings). While there are only three states visible, it is a range, and they can vary a little.
MyWhoosh lets you draft and save power from other riders who are moving in the same direction as you. The draftable distance is 0 to 10 meters. There is a difference in draft strength between drafting one rider and drafting a group of riders. The draft gets slightly stronger the deeper you are in the group. The shape of the draft is actually a funnel from the first rider and gets wider as you get deeper in the group. There is a slight draft benefit to be in the center of the funnel (group).
Wind
The latest update brought the addition of wind into the game. The wind direction can also affect how strong the draft is when you're in a group, based on your position within the group.
The wind direction, the 360 degrees, is divided into 8 sections. And depending on the angle of your direction and the wind direction, you can face
- Tailwind (blue)
- Slight tailwind (light blue)
- Sidewind (orange)
- Slight headwind (pink)
- Headwind (red)
Steering
Steering is possible via steering device, such as Wahoo kickr bike or via using keyboard shortcuts. To steer using the keyboard, use the Arrow Left and Arrow Right keys (or using A and D keys). Steering will work all the time as long as you are moving. The direction of your steer is visible on the screen via animation. There are three to four lanes (depending on each route/world) that your avatar can ride on. As of now, you can steer into any lane regardless of whether there is another rider.
Steering can be used to position yourself better against the wind. When the wind is blowing from front-left side, you should steer to the right side of the road to get more shelter and save a few more watts. The same applies to all wind directions - side wind from the left, you should steer to the right.
While testing steering on Mac (and the same applies to Windows, most likely), I found out that steering will only work when you first click into the MyWhoosh game "background" - somewhere outside of any control. So when you give someone an emoji, steering will not work again until you click on your avatar, for example.
The rider will return to the default lane after around 10 seconds. If you want to stay in a side lane, you need to keep steering there regularly.
Key takeaways
- Draft works from 0 to 10 meters
- Draft gets stronger the closer you are to the rider and the bigger the group in front of you is
- Draft is slightly less strong on the sides, stay in the center
- You can use the steering to shelter from the wind
- You cannot use steering to cut corners; the inside line is not faster
- You need to hold the steering key for some time in order to actually steer, just pressing it shortly will not do anything
- While the draft indicator is visible even during climbs, the draft saving gets rather negligible when traveling less than 20kmh
- In order to be able to steer via keyboard (or zwift controllers that emulate keyboard presses), you need to click on your avatar first (no other control can have focus).
- If you want to stay in a side lane, you need to keep steering as the avatar keeps auto-returning in the middle

Hello, thank you for this addition, it looks really fun.
Can we change our position using just the iPhone app?
Hello Vincent, yes, I believe so, try swiping left and right. Unfortunately, I dont have the game installed on my phone to 100% confirm this.
I love this explanation, very helpful.
would be great if you can make this power-pulse-draft indicator bigger or adjustable for small laptop screens
Sometimes I can steer, I see the big arrow on the screen when I press the arrow burtons, but others times I can't, I press the keyboard arrow but nothing happens and no big arrow on the screen. Is this normal or a connection issue on my part. I have a kickr core v2 and windows 10 pc non HD version.
Hello, will it be compatible with the Elite Sterzo Smart headset?
Article says that steering is working with Wahoo Kickr Bike. Anyhow, I can't seem to find any configuration that enables steering or let´s you configure the keys. Any hints?
can I switch the wind off?
1. Auto-return to a default lane after 10 seconds sounds annoying (maybe increase this time or get rid of it?)
2. Would be really cool if roads could widen/narrow, changing the amount of lanes available across a race/map like in real life.
3. What steering hardware works with MyWhoosh?
4. Does MyWhoosh support fully continuous (analog) lateral positioning with steering hardware, or does the avatar snap to fixed discrete lanes?
I just give my point of view after the wind test since the update and before the wind, the draft is non-existent from the wind, when you have headwind, even in the wheel, a light runner must do more wkg than the one in front which does not reflect reality. Without the wind, the draft is good, with t
